Most AI conversations go nowhere because they start in the wrong place. This post breaks down why asking about โ€œrepetitive workโ€ shuts people downโ€”and why focusing on friction gets to the real opportunities faster. It walks through how to spot where work actually breaks: delays, rework, missing information, and handoffs. Thatโ€™s where AI starts to make a difference. If you want better outcomes, change the question.

One of the mistakes I see in AI conversations is how they start.

Sounds logical. Itโ€™s not. If youโ€™re opening with that, youโ€™re off track.

No one is going to sit there and tell you their job is repetitive โ€” even if parts of it are.

What they hear is:
โ€œWhich part of your job isnโ€™t valuable?โ€

So the conversation stalls, you get safe answers and you miss the real issues.

Youโ€™re not looking for repetition, youโ€™re looking for friction.
โ€ข where things slow down
โ€ข where work gets stuck
โ€ข where people have to redo things
โ€ข where theyโ€™re waiting on someone else

The problem isnโ€™t the task, itโ€™s everything around it.

Change the conversation. Ask things like:
Where do things tend to slow down?
What takes longer than it should?
Where do you have to go back and fix things?
What do you need before you can move forward?
Where do you spend time chasing information?
โ€ข Whatโ€™s the most frustrating part of this process?

This is where the conversation opens up.

โ€ข โ€œWe have to check withโ€ฆโ€
โ€ข โ€œThe data isnโ€™t always rightโ€ฆโ€
โ€ข โ€œWe end up redoing thisโ€ฆโ€
โ€ข โ€œWe wait forโ€ฆโ€

Thatโ€™s the signal, thatโ€™s where the real opportunity sits.

Not in the core task, but in the gaps.
โ€ข Friction โ†’ automate or orchestrate
โ€ข Rework โ†’ validate
โ€ข Delays โ†’ trigger earlier
โ€ข Missing info โ†’ assist
โ€ข Inconsistency โ†’ standardise

Thatโ€™s where you get the real value. You can start to understand where to:
โ€ข remove friction
โ€ข improve flow
โ€ข make work easier to get done

If your AI conversations feel flat, itโ€™s probably not the tech. Itโ€™s the question.
Donโ€™t start with tasks, start with friction.

Thatโ€™s where the value is.
